The first time I put on ballet shoes I was 6 years old. I’m Aria Jasdanwalla and have now reached the Advanced Foundation level with the Royal Academy of Dance ballet curriculum and level 4B with the American Ballet Theatre curriculum.
Dance has always been my escape from reality as my mind focuses all its power on my craft. One of the beauties of ballet is the precision of each body part- this requires immense concentration, leaving no room for wondering thoughts. Further, according to a study by Catherine L. Davis physical exercise greatly increases cognitive function in both adults and children because of the increased blood flow to the brain. This means that after ballet classes I am able to study not only with a clear mind but also with increased productivity.
Discipline, confidence and strength are a few qualities that were subconsciously drilled into me growing up in dance. I am able to sit still and focus for longer durations and be able to reject negative comments and instead take it as constructive. In our classes choreography is also a skill taught to us which brings leadership qualities along with it- in fact this helped me to secure a student council position at my school. The exposure to being on stage to perform instills self-esteem that I’m sure I otherwise would not have. One year, I was the comedic role of a sheep! However, I was able to laugh off all the embarrassing steps and carry out my role with confidence.
